About The Position

The Inpatient Diabetes Educator (RN or RDE) will screen each admitted patient for knowledge deficits of self-management of the diabetes disease process and educate based off the patient’s needs assessment. Appropriately adapts assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the physical, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each person served. Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings. Utilization of assistive devices for lifting is mandatory. Must adhere to safety protocols at all times. Per DRH policy, all required conditions of employment must be met and maintained including required vaccinations. This position requires respirator and fit testing. Required testing will be performed on all team members at risk for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet producing procedures, or any caustic chemicals. Implement DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibit behaviors consistent with DRH core values.

Requirements

  • Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English.
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive/email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information tools.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to remain flexible to quickly adapt to urgent situations.
  • Ability to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to accomplish the requirements of the position.
  • Registered Nurse: Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA); Registered Dietician: Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree after 1/1/2024) and current RDN registration.
  • Must remain current on the core concepts of diabetes education.
  • Registered Nurse: Current, unencumbered RN license in the State of Oklahoma or multistate licensure in a party state in compliance with primary residency rules and requirements.
  • Registered Dietician: Current RDN registration.
  • American Heart Association BLS required; May have up to 30 days from date of hire or transfer to obtain.
  • For those positions requiring travel, a current valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
  • Safety-Sensitive Position - applicants for this position cannot test positive in pre-employment drug tests (or any drug tests administered after employment begins) for the presence of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive component of cannabis.
  • This position requires respirator and fit testing.
  • As a condition of employment, vaccinations are required per DRH Policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Docs, and various web search engines preferred.
  • Previous work-related experience in a hospital setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Screens all inpatient diabetes patients for educational needs.
  • Instructs and councils patients and families on diabetes self-care management, meal planning, and insulin administration.
  • Initiates outpatient Medical Nutrition Therapy order for inpatients that meet criteria.
  • Maintains a working relationship with the Certified Diabetes Educator/program director of the Diabetes Education Department to promote the outpatient educational programs of the organization.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements the Diabetes Prevention Program for the organization.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
