About The Position

A chorus teacher, or choral director, is responsible for leading, instructing, and coordinating a vocal ensemble. The job combines musical expertise and teaching skills to develop students' vocal abilities and provide enriching performance opportunities.

Requirements

  • Formal education: A bachelor's degree in Music Education, Choral Conducting, or a related field is often required, with a master's degree often preferred.
  • Teaching certification: A valid state teaching certification or licensure may be required for positions in public schools.
  • Piano proficiency: The ability to play the piano is typically required for rehearsals and accompaniment.
  • Leadership and inspiration: Possess strong leadership qualities to inspire and motivate students of all ages and skill levels.
  • Strong communication: Effectively articulate musical concepts and performance expectations to students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Patience and empathy: Demonstrate the patience and understanding needed to work with singers at various skill levels and help them develop.
  • Organization and planning: Display strong organizational skills to manage the complex schedules of rehearsals, events, and administrative duties.
  • Musical interpretation: Possess the sensitivity to interpret and convey the artistic nuances of musical pieces.

Responsibilities

  • Teach vocal techniques and music theory: Instruct students on proper vocal production, music theory, sight-reading, and ear training.
  • Select repertoire: Choose appropriate musical pieces for the choir, considering students' skill levels, performance goals, and thematic requirements. This includes researching and incorporating diverse musical traditions.
  • Conduct rehearsals: Lead structured and efficient rehearsals to teach new music and refine performances. Manage rehearsal time effectively while setting a positive and disciplined environment.
  • Organize and conduct performances: Plan, prepare, and conduct performances for concerts, competitions, and special events.
  • Evaluate student progress: Assess students' musical growth and provide constructive feedback to help them improve.
