About The Position

Provides developmental, speech, language, hearing, vision, social/emotional, and behavioral initial screening services to preschool children referred by their parents, pediatricians, teachers, and Project Enlightenment staff due to developmental concerns. Consults with early childhood teachers and directors, as needed.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of early childhood programs and child development practices;
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel; Google Apps;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to work in a team environment; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in education, child development, or related field;
  • Five years of experience working with young children and their families;
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina professional educator’s license in a teaching area;
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of North Carolina requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in education, school psychology, child development or related field;
  • Hold or be eligible for a North Carolina professional educator’s license in the teaching area of birth to kindergarten or elementary education.

Responsibilities

  • Provides developmental, speech, language, hearing, vision, social/emotional, and behavioral initial screening services to preschool children referred by their parents, pediatricians, teachers, and Project Enlightenment staff due to developmental concerns.
  • Creates and provides written reports of screenings to families describing reason for referral, background information, screening results, interpretations, and recommendations.
  • Communicates and reviews developmental screening reports with families of young children in a manner that enhances their understanding of their child in a developmentally appropriate context.
  • Facilitates the referral process to Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) ChildFind and/or community agencies that provide evaluations and/or interventions and support to young children and their families.
  • Serves as a resource to young children and their families by sharing available resources at Project Enlightenment about how to support their child’s communication, literacy, self-regulation, and fine and gross motor skills.
  • Assists Project Enlightenment staff with activities promoting the importance of early screening services to identify needs for early intervention.
  • Ensures compliance with WCPSS, federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies and Project Enlightenment procedures.
  • Promotes positive relationships with schools, agencies, individuals, families, and groups within the community regarding Wake County Smart Start and Project Enlightenment services.
  • Stays abreast of latest trends, developments, and research pertinent to child development, early intervention, and assessment.
  • Collaborates with WCPSS Preschool Services staff, as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
