About The Position

The Development Officer at the MIT Museum is responsible for raising funds to support the Museum's mission through major gift fundraising. This role involves overseeing fundraising initiatives for exhibitions, collections, engagement programs, and the operating budget, while also managing a team that handles corporate memberships and development operations. The Development Officer will collaborate with senior leadership to create a robust fundraising infrastructure and engage with donors and corporate partners to secure significant financial commitments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Three years' direct fundraising experience, preferably in a museum, cultural institution, or higher education organization.
  • Two years' experience managing a team and setting annual staff goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, project management, time management, and communication skills.
  • Entrepreneurial approach to developing a prospect pool.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with confidentiality and discretion.
  • High-level computer proficiency, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven record of cultivation and solicitation of six-figure+ gifts.
  • Familiarity with CRM software, particularly HubSpot.
  • Experience at MIT.
  • Interest in science, innovation, technology, and/or art.

Responsibilities

  • Raise funds to support the Museum's mission through major gift fundraising.
  • Oversee fundraising for exhibitions, collections needs, engagement programs, and the operating budget.
  • Supervise staff managing the Corporate Membership program and development operations.
  • Collaborate with the director, deputy director, and finance officer to develop and implement fundraising strategies.
  • Orchestrate meetings and interactions between Museum staff and donors or prospects to secure six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • Build and manage the Museum's $25 million endowment.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and performance feedback to team members.
  • Ensure documentation of fundraising activities within the Museum's CRM and MIT fundraising database.
