About The Position

Coordinates the review and issuance of permits and contractor licenses; responds to questions and concerns of citizens, contractors, other agencies, and city staff concerning the administration of the city's ordinances, building codes, and other programs handled in the building department.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalency required.
  • Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver's License and a Social Security number.
  • Non-U.S. citizens must have appropriate Immigration documents.
  • Males must be registered for Selective Service, if appropriate.
  • Ability to comply with City of Tupelo drug/alcohol policy.
  • Ability to obtain a satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Ability to interact with the public and members of the construction industry in a professional manner, to explain detailed ordinances and regulations to the general public, and to prepare and present staff reports is required.
  • Use of computers in preparation of documents, reports, and correspondence is also required.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, determine percentages.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, exercise judgment and discretion with regard to department policies and procedures, and maintain positive image of city in interaction with the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or two years of college credit with prior professional experience in local government, with experience related to building construction, zoning and subdivision regulations, or information systems management is preferred.
  • Computer literate in Windows operating system. Microsoft office products and GIS literacy is desirable.
  • Familiarity with database management programs or geographic information systems is desirable.
  • Related education and related experience may be substituted on an equal basis.

Responsibilities

  • Answer telephones, forward messages, and refer customers to appropriate staff.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors and the public regarding the types of work requiring permits and the procedures and requirements for obtaining such permits.
  • Prepare permit and/or zoning applications from information provided by applicants, review application, receive fees, write receipts, and maintain documentation.
  • Coordinate building inspections and field verifications, investigations of violations and complaints; assist building inspectors in record keeping and correspondence.
  • Coordinate issuance of contractors' licenses by assisting with application process; maintain records and verify license status to citizens or other agencies.
