About The Position

Our team is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Detention Officer. The Lee’s Summit Police Department Detention Facility is a temporary holding facility for subjects who have committed a variety of crimes from misdemeanors to felonies. The facility is capable of housing up to 30 subjects; however, outside agencies are utilized for extended sentencing stays over 2 days and the Detention Officer is responsible for coordinating transportation to these outside agencies with the Patrol Division. The job of a Detention Officer is an excellent starting point for future opportunities as a Police Officer. There are daily interactions with Police Officers and Police Supervision. Application deadline is Friday, March 20th. If selected, interviews will be held on Thursday, March 26th.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old at time of employment.
  • Must be a United States citizen or authorized alien worker.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid state Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and acceptable driving record.
  • No felony convictions or commission of or participation in any felony crime, whether detected or not.
  • No on-going or repetitious history of committing or participating in Misdemeanor crimes, whether detected or not.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification within first six (6) months of hire.
  • If applicable, testing as required.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for booking in, searching, fingerprinting and releasing detainees in conformance with Federal, State and City laws and ordinances.
  • Supervises detainees, conducting safety and security inspections, providing access to health care facilities, conducting housing, feeding, bedding and well-being activities.
  • Maintain accurate intake, care, and release records.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies, and facilities.
  • Responsible for completing bond paperwork on defendants. May also have to complete incidents reports and other reports/records related to the Detention process, court actions and proceedings.
  • Receive bonds and handles cash during release of detainee; coordinates with Municipal Court on bond balancing.
  • Responses to warrants with Dispatch or other inquiring agencies and confirms validate.
  • Coordinate transfer of detainees to long-term holding facilities, as well as other local, state or federal law enforcement agencies.
  • May drive Detention van for detainee transfers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May testify in Court proceedings.
