About The Position

Under general supervision, performs all administrative, clerical and manual duties associated with the detention of prisoners. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Establish, complete, and maintain prisoners' paperwork (arrest report, medical history, narrative report, etc.) utilizing knowledge of the various laws and departmental policies and procedures. Ability to visually and through the use of remote video surveillance equipment monitor prisoner status and behavior. Escort prisoners from one area to another, take physical action to prevent escapes and/or assaults and subdue combative/violent prisoners with the appropriate use of force. Properly process prisoners using established book-in/release procedures. Fingerprint, photograph, handcuff and physical search prisoners. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Maintain upkeep of the jail facility by performing minor maintenance duties and reporting major malfunctions to Building Maintenance. Administer intoxilizer test to DWI suspects. Ability to determine prisoner's medical condition and medical treatment if necessary and obtain authorization to transport prisoner to hospital. Oversee the physical activities of the inmates including but not limited to: changing out inmates clothing, seizing property/contraband, ordering, securing, and serving meals, directing inmates to and from the showers, and directing the inmates from their cells to the central area and back to the cells when it is time to go to bed. Conduct training for peers as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of state and local laws.
  • Knowledge of digital systems including Tiburon, TCIC/NCIC, Identix automated fingerprinting Live Scan, and DDSI Mugshot.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers and the public.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
  • Skill in utilizing the appropriate amount of force for any given situation.
  • Ability to maintain accurate detailed records.
  • Ability to accurately count money and inventory property.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply laws, regulations and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to seeing, sorting, pushing, typing and writing.
  • Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds; and push/pull 45 lbs.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to computer, copier and electronic control system.
  • Incumbent is subject to mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • A high school education.
  • One year experience working with the public.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Operator's License, Class C.
