About The Position

The Detention Officer position at Guilford County involves specialized inmate detention and care work in one of two county detention facilities under the Guilford County Sheriff's Department. The role includes inmate intake, detention, care, and release work, requiring observation and accompaniment of inmates within the facility. The position demands patience and firmness when dealing with potentially violent, suicidal, or mentally disturbed detainees, and is performed in a hazardous and confining environment. The employee will work under general supervision, with evaluations based on inmate records and activity reports.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent, or an associate degree in corrections or criminal justice, or a bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated work experience in detention, correction centers, military police, or similar law enforcement settings.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to work in a hazardous and confining environment.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with inmates and the public.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inmate intake by searching, completing required forms, photographing, fingerprinting, and securing personal property.
  • Act as a booking officer by maintaining inmate information, verifying intake forms, classifying inmates, and assigning cell locations.
  • Oversee the security and activities of inmates, supervise meals and cleaning, transport inmates for interviews or court, and monitor medical status.
  • Provide non-confidential inmate information to the public and maintain inmate files.
  • Release inmates on bond or court order, ensuring proper documentation and returning personal property.
  • Supervise trustees in cleaning and maintaining facilities, doing laundry, and storing supplies.
  • Prepare food and maintain facilities as required.
