About The Position

The Detention Officer (Part-Time) is responsible for ensuring the safety, welfare, and custody of inmates at the Polk County Jail. This role involves maintaining control and security within the facility, responding to emergencies, and providing for the basic needs of inmates while adhering to their rights. The officer will engage with inmates, monitor their behavior, and enforce jail regulations effectively.

Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Good moral character with no serious crime convictions.
• Ability to meet physical and psychological standards set by the County Sheriff and Jail Administration.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
• Ability to document incidents clearly and concisely.
• Ability to enforce rules firmly and fairly.
• Ability to analyze data and reach logical conclusions.
• Ability to participate in physical restraint of hostile inmates.
• Ability to complete CPR and First Aid training within six months of hire.

Nice To Haves

• Prior experience in a law enforcement or correctional setting.
• Knowledge of jail operations and inmate management.

Responsibilities

• Maintain control and internal security of the Polk County Jail through active interaction with inmates.
• Provide for the inmates' basic needs, physical safety, and sanitary conditions.
• Apply positive or negative reinforcement for inmates who violate jail rules.
• Respond to emergency situations such as fire alarms, medical emergencies, and altercations in a calm and organized manner.
• Identify serious medical conditions and administer basic first aid or life-saving aid as necessary.
• Complete and maintain records for various jail reports, both manual and computer-generated.
• Perform various duties including housing unit officer, control room, exercise, visitation, intake and discharge, and disciplinary hearings.
• Conduct regular and unannounced searches of inmates and inmate areas.
