About The Position

This position maintains the safety, security, and sanitation needs of the Detention Center, including the welfare of inmates, staff, and the public.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Candidate must have no felony convictions or significant misdemeanor convictions.
  • Successfully pass the Criminal Background Check and Motor Vehicles Report.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a detention or corrections environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of standardized rules, procedures, or operations applicable to the work performed is preferred.
  • Considerable training is required to do the full range of standard assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces detention center rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; maintains inmate discipline; maintains a secure and peaceful environment in the facility.
  • Receives, processes, and books incoming inmates and arrestees; explains facility rules, regulations, and procedures; secures, inventories, and records the personal property of each inmate; conducts interviews to obtain personal information; makes fingerprint and photographic records of incoming inmates; records inmate data in the computer system and completes required documentation; determines the appropriate classification of each inmate; assigns facility housing and issues clothing, bedding, and personal hygiene items.
  • Conducts release of inmates per established procedures; completes applicable forms and ensures appropriate approvals; verifies the identity of inmates and returns personal property; contacts victims upon release of an inmate.
  • Supervises and monitors inmate activities inside the facility continually, including activities involving meals, recreation, cleaning activities, personal hygiene, medical care, visitation, religious services, commissary, mail, and telephone calls; conducts/records periodic population counts of inmates; logs daily movements and activities of inmates; transfers inmates to/from cell pods, booking areas, work details, court, medical facilities, or other locations as directed; escorts inmates from one area of the facility to another; administers disciplinary actions as appropriate, such as restriction to cells.
  • Coordinates, monitors, or performs various functions associated with ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of inmates, which may include distribution of meal trays, removal/counting of meal trays, provision of clothing/bedding or other supplies, issuing of toiletries and hygiene kits, provision of medical aid/supplies, coordination of visitation and telephone communications, or distribution of mail; receives and responds to inmate requests; maintains accountability for razors and other supplies used by inmates.
  • Maintains/assures the security of detention center; operates master control board and monitors cameras/video surveillance equipment; controls opening/closing of all doors in the facility; maintains visitor log; maintains key control; makes rounds of the facility and performs periodic security checks; checks locks, alarms, and other security devices; conducts pat searches and strip searches of inmates; searches inmates, cells, mail, building, and ground areas to locate/remove contraband and to maintain security; response to violence, alarms, or other emergencies; mediates inmate problems, intervenes in physical confrontations, and assists in controlling/restraining violent/unruly inmates; assists in conducting searches for escapees.
  • Communicate with adjoining shift staff to gather/exchange information on activities, problems, special situations, or other areas requiring attention; review activity logs, incident reports, and general correspondence to maintain awareness of current issues. Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, inmates, law enforcement personnel, court personnel, attorneys, bonding companies, medical providers, visitors, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
