About The Position

The Detention Deputy is responsible for the care and security of all prisoners and inmates lawfully in the custody of the Sheriff. Performs duties related to the daily operation of the detention facility. Duties include detentions or special assignments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and some experience in work involving public contact.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn State and County statutes and ordinances; first aid and medical procedures and practices; County geography and surrounding areas including roads, streets, landmarks, buildings, and similar features.
  • Skilled in the use of law enforcement vehicles, firearms, related law enforcement equipment principles and practices of self-defense.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with co-workers, other county departments, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and the public; work in close proximity of and effectively communicate with inmates.
  • Ability to read and review documents, reports, and training materials and to observe activities while on duty; to discuss situations, make presentations to the public and testify in court.
  • Must be in a physical condition to be able to perform a high level of sustained physical activity; ability to control a suspect/prisoner; ability to operate a computer keyboard; ability to operate various office equipment; ability to safely operate a vehicle.
  • Work is generally sedentary with occasional exposure to stress and life-threatening situations.
  • Assignments require working nights and/or rotating shifts.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified by the State of Colorado as a Peace Officer preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, direct, and maintain order within the detention facility and surrounding areas of the detention facility.
  • Ensure prisoner and inmate safety and welfare, conduct pod inspections, booking and bonding inmates, ensure compliance of facility rules and regulations.
  • Schedule and supervise inmate visitations, inmate work crews and the dispensing of food to inmates.
  • Testify in court in adjudication of criminal acts occurring in the detention facility.
  • Enter daily activity information into a database; Prepare and complete offense reports and interoffice reports as necessary.
  • Provide security in the Courthouse and courtrooms.
  • Transport inmates to various facilities.
  • Attend training sessions, classes, or schools.
  • May act as field training officer for new hires.
  • Perform duties of Patrol Deputy when necessary.
  • Perform similar duties as assigned.
