About The Position

Supervises and participates in the security, protection, transport, and guarding of prisoners housed within the Alamosa County Detention Facility on an assigned shift.

Requirements

  • Knows how to make an inventory of supplies and recommends purchases

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to work schedule to meet all the obligation of the position
  • Ability to work independently or in a team
  • Ability to follow the policies and procedures of the County and the Sheriff’s Office
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements listed below
  • To be eligible to apply for Detention Corporal; one year of experience with the Alamosa Sheriff’s Office or at least one year of experience from another Law Enforcement agency
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License Required
  • First Aid/CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the care and well-being of inmates; monitors time, people, equipment, and other resources for the unit to ensure efficient organization and completion of work
  • Communicates, and monitors policies, procedures, and standards for the unit. Suggests improvement when necessary
  • Coordinates, and assigns the work of others in unit, monitors and evaluates performance and work outputs to maintain efficiency and quality of work
  • Ensures quality standards and compliance when regulations are maintained.
  • Ensures the security of all exterior and security doors in the facility
  • Trains officers on shift in computer use, inmate management, department policies and procedures in conjunction with Field Training Officers
  • Supervises all transporting of inmates to and from the detention center
  • Coordinates court dates and medical appointments of inmates in conjunction with court and medical staff
  • Ensures all inmates are accounted for at all times; prevents inmate escapes, introduction and/or passing of contraband and prevents the assault or injury of inmates and staff
  • Prepares and maintains records of daily activities on the computer in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; reviews reports prepared by subordinates for completeness and accuracy
  • In absence of the Duty Sergeant, supervises the preparation of written reports on incidents occurring inside the facility which includes the actions/use of necessary force by officers to be utilized in criminal prosecutions, defense against lawsuits, disciplinary procedures against inmates and at time for internal affair investigations
  • Observes and controls inmate movement within the housing unit by communicating with inmates either in person or over the intercom system; conducts inmate searches for contraband; utilizes force and/or self-defense techniques as necessary to maintain order; provides first aid and CPR when necessary
  • Monitors inmates’ behavior and attitudes for signs of personality changes, depression and developing conflicts between inmates; enforces the rules and guidelines for inmates which includes initiating disciplinary action when necessary; prepares and maintains records of inmates’ physical or mental problems
  • Prepares and reviews reports detailing operational problems such as defective equipment, makes suggestions for improving services or hazardous conditions
  • Supervises work release activities by maintaining control of inmates allowed work privileges; maintains records of work performance and polices the area of their living quarters; conducts various and sporadic shake downs and strip searches for the safety of the officers and other inmates
  • Ensures the proper storage of contraband seized as the result of criminal or administrative activity
  • Ensures the safety of visitors to include attorneys and other professional visits
  • Answers inmate’s questions regarding the rules and regulation of the facility and provides information regarding the booking process, bond amounts and charges, etc.
  • Makes an inventory of supplies and recommends purchases of necessary items
  • May back-up computer files from the booking computer daily
  • Performs all other duties as required by the Detention Sergeant
  • Show up for work on time and ready to work
