ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides testimony as a witness in court; Analyzes completed police reports to determine what additional information and investigative work is needed; prepare charges or responses to charges, or information for court cases, according to formalized procedures; Obtains facts or statements from complainants, witnesses, and accused persons and records interviews, using recording device; Obtains summary of incident from officer in charge at crime scene, taking care to avoid disturbing evidence; Prepares and serves search and arrest warrants; Records progress of investigation, maintains informational files on suspects and submits reports to commanding officer or magistrate to authorize warrants; Performs other related duties as assigned. JOB SCOPE: The detective is exposed to various incident settings and must rely on previous training and experience in the application of procedures and supervision of personnel. Successful performance results in effective law enforcement practices contributing to the safety/well being of the community and the investigation of criminal activity. Errors in the work can endanger the lives of city residents and personnel, jeopardize property, and hinder the successful prosecution of offenders. Job has recurring work situations involving moderate degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and procedures is high. Errors in judgment and execution will waste time and resources adversely impacting unit performance. Incumbent operates independently but work is verified by supervision. Supervisory Controls: The Detective Sergeant defines objectives, deadlines and priorities for performing work assignments. Work is periodically reviewed for accuracy and compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Guidelines: Guidelines include federal and state laws, criminal and traffic laws, city ordinances, departmental policies and procedures and court decisions. Guidelines may require interpretation and judgment. COMMUNICATIONS/CUSTOMER CONTACT: Contacts are typically with co-workers, law enforcement and public safety personnel, other agency personnel, attorneys, and the general public. Contacts are for exchanging information, providing services, resolving problems, influencing and interviewing people in a variety of environments.
