About The Position

Hourly Rate: $43.56 Position Summary Reporting to the Sergeant of Investigations, the Detective provides investigative support and information management for the Temple University Department of Public Safety’s patrol and security divisions, as well as Department supervisors/executives and the University Administration. The Detective is responsible for delivering and managing all services and projects while maintaining deadlines under the direction and guidance of management and/or with limited supervision; reviews and submits reports on cases investigated to superiors; prevents crime by processing information received; is proactive in interviewing witnesses and canvassing areas, as well as thoroughly analyzing data collected. The Detective directs the photographing of crime scenes, evidence, and suspects and the collection/submission of all evidence within the chain of custody standards/protocols and enters information on suspicions and statements of witnesses and informants in the data management system. Investigates criminal and non-criminal incidents, determining what occurred, identifying criminal activity and those committing such behavior, and utilizing all resources to arrest those responsible for crime(s) committed. The Detective is responsible for establishing individual goals and providing recommendations or input on activities to support larger unit objectives and may propose new projects. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. This position requires the following background checks & clearances: Driver’s License check, PA State Police Criminal Background, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, Federal FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background

Requirements

  • Minimum two (2) years of College or equivalent work-related experience may be accepted.
  • Must have at least three years’ experience as a Police Officer.
  • Current certification (ACT 120) under the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC).
  • Must have a current valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Additional certification may be necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Working knowledge of applicable computer software and applicable professional principles.
  • Must be physically able to pursue on foot and physically restrain subjects when necessary.
  • Must be able to move non-ambulatory persons for transportation to and from hospitals, which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and balancing.
  • Requires visual acuity sufficient to pass the practical handgun and long gun course.
  • Must be able to pass a strict background check, including criminal history, motor vehicle, etc.
  • Perform Surveillance.

Nice To Haves

  • Past experience as a criminal investigator or detective
  • Experience in Background Investigations.
  • Experience with Cleary Act reporting.
  • Experience in the use of Criminal Justice databases, including Premier One (P1)
