About The Position

The Detective Lieutenant of Campus Safety at Wheaton College is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of campus safety services, reporting directly to the Director/Chief of Campus Safety. This role involves managing various safety initiatives, fostering community relations, and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations while promoting a safe and secure environment for all campus members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in higher education
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of policing in a campus environment
  • Understanding of the Clery Act and Title IX regulations
  • Strong leadership, planning, and critical thinking skills
  • Commitment to mentoring and developing staff
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in disaster preparedness and emergency management
  • Ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary responses to emergencies
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • POST Certification for a State Police Warrant (SSPO) and valid driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Campus Safety Second in Command
  • Direct departmental initiatives including crime prevention, investigations, dispatch/communications, training and education, and emergency management
  • Support and advance the missions of Wheaton College through best practices in campus law enforcement
  • Enhance the protection of the campus community in accordance with laws and policies
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Coordinate investigations as assigned by the Director of Campus Safety
  • Serve as a CLERY Team Leader
  • Participate in the selection, management, and development of staff
  • Serve as institutional liaison to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies
  • Investigate various crimes and manage property and evidence
  • Liaison for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office and Bristol District Court
  • Conduct and oversee Internal Affairs investigations
  • Liaison for training for Special State Police Officers (SSPO)
