About the position

The Detective position at the City of Daphne involves specialized law enforcement work focused on investigating criminal cases, collecting and processing evidence, and ensuring the protection of life and property. The role requires a certified Peace Officer to enforce laws, conduct investigations, and collaborate with various agencies while maintaining a high level of community visibility and engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces all applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Investigates felony offenses and performs preliminary interviews with witnesses, victims, and suspects.
  • Supervises and documents activities at crime scenes, including evidence collection and processing.
  • Meets with other agencies to exchange and obtain information related to investigations.
  • Conducts narcotic/drug-related investigations and participates in strategic operations.
  • Obtains and executes search and arrest warrants, and directs polygraph tests.
  • Prepares incident/offense reports and maintains control over physical evidence.
  • Coordinates with the District Attorney's office for prosecution of offenders and testifies in court as needed.
  • Provides technical advice and training to patrol officers and new detectives.
  • Participates in disaster and emergency relief efforts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational/technical training in criminal investigations.
  • Completion of Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) program.
  • Two years of experience as a Patrol Officer, including training in criminal investigations.
  • Valid State of Alabama driver's license.
  • Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in criminal defense law.
  • Strong writing and organizational skills.
  • Basic math skills and data entry proficiency.
