About The Position

The magazine is seeking a staff designer to join our award-winning design team. You will work closely with art directors, editors, and photo editors to conceptualize and package stories and columns for the magazine online and in print. You are adept at creating compelling and cohesive digital and print presentations. You have basic experience in video editing and motion graphics. Also, you have excellent typography and composition skills, the ability to think conceptually, and be adept at organizing complex content into engaging narratives. This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. You will report to the Design Director.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of editorial or storytelling design experience.
  • A strong portfolio that shows command of typographic voice, layout and color.
  • Comfort working independently and collaborating with colleagues of different backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes under tight deadlines.
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator) and Figma.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience commissioning illustration.
  • Basic understanding of evolving video trends on mainstream and emerging social channels.
  • Knowledge of digital tools and programs, including content management systems.
  • Basic understanding of video and motion graphics editing and production workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design forthcoming columns and features for both digital and print.
  • Design on and off-platform promotions for stories.
  • Commission illustrations for columns and features for both digital and print.
  • Edit video in support of the digital presentation of stories.
  • Design basic motion graphics sequences for videos as needed.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
