About The Position

Designer I or II or III – Solar SUMMARY Mortenson is currently seeking a Designer I or II or III – Solar that will be responsible for the drawing preparation, drafting, and design engineering for utility scale Solar projects (> 100 MWdc) and others as requested. Will also be responsible for working closely with other engineering, design, estimating, and construction team members to coordinate overall design package and requirements. This position offers opportunities at levels 1, 2 and 3, allowing candidates to apply based on their experience and qualifications. Compensation for this role is determined based on factors such as experience and location. Hiring Locations: Minneapolis, MN / Denver, CO / Fargo, ND / San Antonio, TX

Requirements

  • Associates or Bachelor technical degree in Engineering Technology, architecture, or related field
  • Advanced understanding of discipline specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies
  • Knowledge of business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
  • Working knowledge of or are familiar with software packages: Required Knowledge: AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical Familiarity: AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoLISP/CAD automation, AutoCAD Construction Cloud, Google Earth, ArcGIS/GIS, MicroStation, Primtech, Revit, Geopak, InRoads
  • Proficient in the use of computer-aided design software and Microsoft Office
  • Proficient in CADD theories and principles
  • Ability to perform basic designer assignments independently and handle multiple projects with shifting priorities
  • Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input and feedback
  • Ability to travel up to 10%
  • Designer I Qualifications: Associate degree in CADD preferred 2+ years of design experience as a practicing designer/technician Experience in the utility scale or commercial & industrial (C&I) solar industry
  • Designer II Qualifications: Associate degree in CADD preferred 4+ years of design experience as a practicing designer/technician Experience in the utility scale or commercial & industrial (C&I) solar industry
  • Designer III Qualifications: Associate degree in CADD preferred 6+ years of design experience as a practicing designer/technician Experience in the utility scale or commercial & industrial (C&I) solar industry

Responsibilities

  • Provide Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)/Designer support for proposals, estimating, procurement, construction and design change scoping packages in support of the engineering process
  • Prepare, provide guidance, or assist in preparing and developing the engineering drawings and deliverables for primarily utility scale solar projects with engineering oversight
  • Electrical one-line and three-line diagrams
  • Layout Drawings of the site including PV module/tracker placement, inverter placement, electrical/instrumentation equipment placement, and cable routing.
  • Drawings detailing the installations
  • Bill of materials and cable schedules
  • Maintain a variety of related records, databases and reports
  • Provide technical drafting support in the creation of construction drawing sets
  • Compile engineering data from drawings or field notes
  • Perform arithmetic computations using specified formulas
  • Provide direction and guidance to other drafters and designers
  • Ensure design schedules are met including regularly providing project status updates to Project Engineer
  • Effectively plan, organize, schedule and monitor work activities
  • Thoroughly and accurately develop correspondence, documentation and sketches
  • Conduct project detailed designs aligned with our customer requirements and Mortenson’s best practice standards
  • Learn and follow company and client drawing standards and procedures
  • Prepare design packages by developing the design requirements with the engineer and coordinating integration of other design groups input into the final documents
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects
  • Revise existing drawings and prepare new drawings of basic components from explicit verbal or written instructions or detailed sketches
  • Utilize technical understanding of solar design principles to provide design leadership and innovation
  • Perform a broad scope of Designer assignments of moderate difficulty and CADD assignments of high difficulty
  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
