About The Position

Zachry Nuclear Engineering, Inc. (ZNE) is currently seeking a Designer I, Electrical for a direct hire position located in our Stonington, CT or Charlotte, NC office. Under direction/guidance from engineers or supervision, the successful candidate will be relied upon to assist in the planning, design, and development of electrical drawings for various projects. Related activities include research to obtain detailed project and design criteria as well as providing field support including field verifications for retrofit applications, as-built documentation, and installation supervision. The candidate must also be able to independently apply a working knowledge of electronics and/or electrical systems and computerized drafting methods to prepare various electrical drawings including wiring diagrams, one-lines, and schematics to represent the electrical design. The candidate must also be able to demonstrate the ability to draw complex electrical systems from sketches or specifications using appropriate symbology, terms, procedures, and drafting standards.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in drafting, design or engineering technology or equivalent experience in the design of electrical and controls systems
  • 3 years (minimum) of experience in engineering drafting and familiarity with electrical design practices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability to direct drafting personnel on drawing assignments
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation CAD software packages (or an equivalent software package)
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of design practices, codes, and standards applicable to structural components
  • Working knowledge of structural steel types and materials as they are available in the industry
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design principles and practices
  • Effective time management skills
  • Ability to pass security and drug screening and maintain unescorted commercial nuclear plant access
  • Ability to perform walk downs of equipment in an industrial plant environment, including climbing ladders, working at height, carrying equipment up to 50 pounds, accessing security-controlled areas, and entering confined spaces and controlled hazardous areas

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to utilize various drafting and CADD techniques as required for project requirements
  • Knowledge of MicroStation (preferred) and/or AutoCAD is essential
  • Recent plant modification package development and/or field experience on nuclear power plant projects is a plus
  • Additional certifications and/or courses in basic electronics and/or electrical systems desired

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of bills of material
  • Resolution of client comments
  • As-built drawing preparation
  • Reviewing manufacture’s drawings and other discipline drawings
  • Communicating with the engineer and other disciplines to resolve any design problems
  • Advise, assist, and occasionally direct drafting personnel in performance of their assigned duties
  • Produce complex engineering drawings in a 2-D or 3-D environment
  • Check drawings for accuracy including dimensions, spelling, drafting standards and completeness utilizing correct project design criteria
  • Participate in field walk downs to obtain measurements, verify as-built documentation, and develop field sketches in support of plant modifications and design installations
  • Communicate with project engineers and other disciplines to develop drawings and resolve design discrepancies
  • Interface with the customer and their construction representatives to integrate designs to satisfy their standards
