About The Position

Entry Level Design position: Under immediate direction and training oversight learning the basic foundations and fundamentals of design such as electric and gas standards system. This role assists senior designers in producing drawings, schematics, and design packages that ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operation of substations, protective relays, communication systems, and control equipment. The Entry‑Level System Protection & Control Designer supports the development, design, and documentation of protection and control systems used in electric transmission and distribution networks. Under immediate direction is instructed on how to determine specifications, materials, costs, customer charges, permitting, and right of way requirements and develops the necessary documentation and work management system input to meet all prerequisites for construction. Under immediate direction, learns appropriate customer contact and communication techniques. Subject to overtime. May be required to respond to emergency events.

Requirements

  • Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and mechanical drawing necessary to create legible, accurate, and technically acceptable construction drawings. Familiarity with utility maps and records.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Technical Occupations Selection System Test.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet Company driving standards.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical or electronic principles, gained through coursework, technical training, or hands‑on experience. Experience or training in the utilization of CADD is preferred. In lieu of these preferences; the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience can be considered.
  • Ability to use personal vehicle on a regular basis for Company business.
  • May be required to become Notary Public in the State of Maryland, depending on specific assignment.
  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, such as schematics, wiring diagrams, or elementary diagrams. Ability to learn and apply utility design standards, protection and control concepts, and substation equipment fundamentals. Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow structured design processes and produce accurate documentation. Ability to manage multiple tasks and work in a team‑oriented, project‑driven environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree in Computer-Aided Drafting or in lieu of degree, 3-5 years of experience in design and/or drafting disciplines, with a background in system protection and control.
