Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments. Experience with A4W Piping & Mechanical Design is desirable. Competency in NNS CAD equipment/tools, including, but not limited to AutoCAD, AutoCAD Inventor (3D modeling), and NX. is required. Software skill requirements also include Microsoft Office suite programs, SharePoint, and other web-based design tools. Knowledge of accepted Piping & Mechanical design methods and concepts, ship checking skills, and the applicant must be familiar with engineering, design, security, and other principles relating to Naval ship design. Ability to physically access a wide variety of working sites, including those aboard commissioned ships, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling, stooping, standing, etc. Ability to obtain and retain a security clearance and ability to obtain and retain full or partial radiation worker qualifications. Short-duration work away from NNS in such areas as San Diego, CA, Bremerton, WA, Yokosuka, Japan, or other areas of ship operations. Previous deck plate experience in Piping departments and a working knowledge of CVN68 Class Reactor/propulsion plants is preferred.
