About The Position

SUMMARY: Provide substation physical design and technical support to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for the projects, often working with other disciplines for solutions. This role includes both direct billable client work (project work) and project support. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline design work for projects and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development, project cost estimating, and may participate in business development efforts at some level. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Under minimum supervision in the area of power delivery and grid analysis, the incumbent will provide:  Engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems.  Effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.  Thorough, timely, and accurate technical correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.  Continuous improvement of job-related technical and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.  Effective oral and written communication skills.  Should be able to understand and create substation physical arrangement drawing packages for construction.  Support the company's goals and represent the company positively and professionally.  Interact with customer’s internal technical personnel on an as needed basis.  Support professional relationships with customers.  Monitor deliverables, schedules, and present solutions to the client.  Perform otherduties as assigned by management. COMPLEXITY OF WORK : Complex; established procedures not available. Major decision making. RELATIONSHIP OUTSIDE WORK GROUP : Influences decisions of moderate nature requiring high degree of tact. Requirements

  • Either a graduate from a college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 2 to 4 years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 5 to 10 years equivalent experience with no degree.
  • Experience 5-7 Year(s) Experience as a Substation Designer with the electrical industry in the field of power delivery.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals, operational procedures, etc.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret spread sheets.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use AutoCAD for creating engineering drawing packages.
  • Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings.
  • Thorough understanding of substation design and industry standard design practices.
  • Ability to interpret physical design for utility substations – including arrangements, elevations, fence and grading plans, grounding plans and details and equipment support structures.
  • Ability to provide cross discipline coordination with other disciplines to create foundation and grading plans.
  • Ability to produce complete physical substation drawing packages suitable for use by construction crews to demo/install substation projects.
  • Create substation physical design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects.
  • Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.
  • Accomplish projects in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to visit sites, advise on substation physical issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction.
  • Experience working in a field or construction environment implementing or verifying engineering drawings.
  • Ability to think both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • General knowledge of NEC and NESC.
  • Additional enhancement - ability to design foundations and piers.
  • Additional enhancement - ability to design structures and steel supports.
