Job Description I. JOB SUMMARY The Designated RN Charge nurse is a role model and a resource for the department. The Charge is responsible for assessing the units’ need to provide adequate resources for current and upcoming shifts by collaborating with the director, nursing supervisor and other departments. II. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Front-line leadership for the department. Coordinates with medical staff and provides leadership and guidance to the nursing team to ensure high quality and safe patient care is delivered. Monitoring/management of patient flow within the department. Delegation of patient assignments based on acuity, delegates tasks appropriately and adjusts staffing needs as required. Provides clinical guidance to staff nurses, addressing complex patient situations and making informed decision regarding patient care Ensures a smooth handover between shifts by providing comprehensive reports on patient status and updates to the incoming charge nurse. Monitors adherence to policies and procedures, identifying areas for improvement and implementing quality initiatives within the unit. Assist with department education needs to existing and new staff Foster team approach by addressing staff concerns/conflict resolution in real time. Develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families promoting decision making based on the assessment of patient medical histories, symptoms, examinations, diagnosis, conditions and treatments. Comply with laws and regulations in maintaining patient information. Provide effective patient/family education focusing on improving their understanding of their condition and treatment plan to optimize their health outcomes. Performs nursing care according to the population served on the unit as referenced in the Administrative, Scope of Services Policy. Attends leadership development courses quarterly. Actively participates is staff 90 day and annual evaluations as assigned/directed by the Department Director. Performs other duties as assigned in line with current basic nursing scope.
