About The Position

We are searching for an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. This part-time position will provide services for ARL employee(s) who have hearing loss by facilitating, supporting, and maximizing collaborations within ARL, the University, visitors, sponsors, and other stakeholders in a variety of research settings, at both on and off-site locations. ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in ASL/English Interpreting or related degree plus three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Fluency in ASL
  • Demonstrated success with active listening and analyzing language quickly to interpret tone, emotion, and context accurately
  • Knowledge of RID and NAD standards, ethics, and code of conduct, and willingness to become certified/maintain certification in RID and/or NAD
  • Ability to maintain a constant and high level of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain a government security clearance at the secret level

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from RID and/or NAD
  • Experience in a University or research setting
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required

Responsibilities

  • Simultaneously interpret/transliterate from English into American Sign Language, as well as from American Sign Language into English
  • Contribute to the assessment of accessible meetings and events; recommend changes for improvements
  • Maintain awareness of best practices, emerging trends, issues, and legislation related to interpreter services
  • Operate in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and National Association of the Deaf (NAD) code of professional conduct, with emphasis applied to maintaining confidentiality
