This temporary Design Technician Intern position is 100% on-site in Rock Falls, Illinois, and is not eligible for company-sponsored benefits, including but not limited to health care, dental, vision, life and AD&D, disability, paid time off (PTO), and retirement plans. Successful candidates for the Design Technician Intern position demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and professionalism. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the intern supports the engineering team by assisting with the creation and revision of CAD models, drawings, and supporting documentation. The role contributes directly to the development of tooling, fixtures, and fabrication layouts that support IFH’s high standards of manufacturing excellence.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in engineering technology or related degree program with accredited academic institution required.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
  • Strong work ethic with integrity while prioritizing efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ability and knowledge apply an entry-level understanding of 3D modeling and 2D drafting, with interest in developing SolidWorks skills, including sheet metal design functions.
  • Ability and knowledge to develop, use, and apply critical thinking skills, sound judgement, and logical reasoning.
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge for documenting and communicating technical information clearly.
  • Ability, knowledge, and skill to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability, knowledge, and skill to demonstrate professionalism and use respectful communication with employees at all levels within the organization as well as external stakeholders.
  • Ability to learn and understand the importance of collaboration with cross-functional teams to support alignment of customer requirements with operational capacity.
  • Ability to learn how to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and develop foundational understanding of manufacturing design, fixture/tooling development, engineering principles, and operational capacity.
  • Ability and knowledge to apply basic skill and proficiency using ERP system and Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Ability and willingness to comply with all company policies, processes, and procedures including, but not limited to code of conduct.
  • Ability and skill to fluently speak, read, write, and understand English.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with creating and updating customer quotes by preparing supporting drawings, models, and documentation for tanks and related systems.
  • Supports the development and revision of 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings using SolidWorks, ensuring alignment with industry design and drafting practices and procedures.
  • Applies SolidWorks Sheet Metal tools under guidance to prepare layouts for fabrication.
  • Supports the design and detailing of tooling and fixtures used in manufacturing processes.
  • Helps maintain and organize accurate records of engineering documentation, drawings, and revision history.
  • Assists with design and documentation support for cross-functional teams.
  • Performs other relevant duties, tasks, assignments, and projects, upon request or as business needs require.
