At BWXT, our interns perform challenging tasks in their field of study while developing and delivering unique solutions for use in a nuclear environment. Our interns work collaboratively as part of our teams and will create/update drawings and procedures, assist with product and/or tooling designs, perform testing and analysis, and assist with project management and the procurement of materials as needed. A BWXT internship not only provides valuable on the job training but allows you to be a part of something bigger! BWXT offers paid internships along with a housing stipend for those interns whose home of record is more than 50 miles from Barberton, OH. Internships will last approximately 10-12 weeks. At the end of the internship, each intern has the opportunity to present their completed work/ assigned projects to the leadership team.

  • Support in performing stress analyses of nuclear pressure vessels and other highly engineered products.
  • Assist with conducting finite element analysis, custom post-processing software, and closed form analytical techniques.
  • Assist with performing standard and advanced structural analysis methods including linear elastic sizing, fatigue, elastic-plastic, fracture mechanics, shock and vibration, and thermal/mechanical.
  • Work with members of other engineering disciplines (manufacturing, quality, welding, drafters, thermal fluids, etc.) in a team environment to generate component designs to meet code requirements and to optimize the design for manufacturability.
  • Work closely with on-site manufacturing to resolve real time fabrication related issues.
  • Communicate effectively in presentations and written technical reports.
  • Must be enrolled full time in an accredited university/college in mechanical, aerospace, civil engineering or similar degree.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in presentations and written technical reports.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
  • Prior internship experience.
  • Experience in the use of finite element analysis (FEA) software (preferably Abaqus or Ansys).
  • Experience of computer programming codes (ex. C++, Fortran, Python, etc.)
