About The Position

As a front and side airbags engineer, every decision you make has a direct line of sight to our customers and their families — you are helping design, validate, and release components that support how the vehicle protects people in some of their worst moments. At this level you are expected to operate with a level of independent discernment and are typically responsible for implementing functional strategy, administering and coordinating programs, counseling and advising management. As a fully qualified individual contributor who has knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the function, you will provide judgment and analysis for the design, development and implementation of technical products and systems. In this role you would resolve highly complex technical issues and conduct advanced research. You will recommend alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures and be skilled and proficient with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. This person will rely mostly on extensive personal experience and discernment to plan and accomplish goals. You will perform multiple tasks along the vehicle development supporting the Interiors Organization and a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree Required in Engineering
  • 5+ years' experience
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work with multidisciplinary, cross-cultural teams
  • Proficient at dealing effectively with ambiguity and forward-thinking environment
  • Capacity to lead projects, provide accurate time estimates, and prioritize efficiently
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others

Nice To Haves

  • MS in Engineering
  • Demonstrated experience in Interior Restraint (steering wheel, airbag or seat belt) Systems Design Release experience
  • Vehicle integration experience within Interior/Safety or other functional areas
  • Design For Six Sigma / Red X experience
  • Experience with DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and GD&T (Geometric Dimension and Tolerance)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute technical solutions for front and side airbag applications to support new vehicle programs
  • Perform engineering design evaluations and concept development across global vehicle programs
  • Utilize engineering tools and collaborate with VDDV groups including Safety Performance to successfully develop the best system solution
  • Package airbags and drive system collaboration within the vehicle (Interior IP/Trim/Overhead/Seats, Electrical, Body, etc.)
  • Work multi-functionally to support initial vehicle configuration work, realize cost optimization, deliver requirements, and implement product and process improvements
  • Balance business imperatives, including but not limited to cost, mass, complexity, and timing
  • Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations (e.g. Design, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, Validation, suppliers) and lead the Product Development Team (PDT)
  • Stay abreast of relevant new technology and products
  • Evaluate supplier proposals and designs
  • Ensure specifications at the vehicle, system and component level and regulations for all regions of sale are met with balanced solutions
  • Summarize complex issues for leadership support/escalation
  • Effectively facilitate meetings and publish necessary documentation
  • Willingness to travel as required
