About The Position

The Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) is a vital part of New York City’s transportation system and economy. The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is undertaking a long-term fix of BQE Central, the City-owned portion of the BQE, from Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street in Brooklyn, with a focus on safety, resiliency, and community priorities. While advancing the long-term fix, NYC DOT is also continuing interim repairs to maintain the highway in a state of good repair. The Design Project Manager will be part of the new BQE Special Project Office (SPO) of the BQE Central Project. The selected candidate will support (a) engineering functions related to multiple major bridge reconstruction projects for the BQE Central Project and (b) management of the State-of-Good-Repair initiative that must also be implemented. Duties will include but are not limited to:

Requirements

  • A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer.
  • Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Assist BQE Central Project leadership on the development of the State of Good Repair program, in coordination with the Division of Bridges.
  • Advise BQE Central Project leadership on the development of project goals and objectives, in coordination with the Division of Bridges.
  • Assist the BQE Central SPO with coordination, oversight, and evaluation of complex engineering deliverables, including design reports, calculations, plans, and construction concepts, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and City codes and standards.
  • Review engineering studies and analyses for the State-of-Good-Repair initiative and provide recommendations based on study outcomes.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of written technical reports, memoranda, tabulated registers, and presentations related to consultant rehabilitation designs.
  • Review and advise on engineering concepts for feasibility and constructability within the BQE Central corridor.
  • Review contract documents and reports, and provide technical input to contract planning, scheduling, and execution, as directed by the supervisor.
  • Coordinate and engage with the BQE Joint Venture (BQE JV), which consists of consultants supporting the advancement of the BQE Central Project alongside NYC DOT staff.
  • Represent the agency in coordination with external stakeholders, including FHWA, NYSDOT, and other city, state, and federal agencies.
  • Review scopes of work and cost estimates for extra work items.
