The Design Manager will provide senior-level oversight of substation, transmission, distribution, and related electrical engineering design projects. This role functions as a Subject Matter Expert, supporting project managers, mentoring technical staff, and ensuring high-quality project delivery. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in power delivery engineering and thrives in a multidisciplinary environment.

Requirements

  • B.S.in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 15 years of power delivery engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Strong data management, QA/QC, analytical, and technical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and strategic planning abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management capabilities.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal permitting process and integration with engineering process for utility scale energy projects.
  • Experience and willingness to support business development which may include preparing/reviewing presentations and participating in client meetings (in person or virtually).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, etc.
  • Experience with construction coordination platforms such as Procore, Construction Cloud, etc.
  • Master's degree in business, engineering, or closely aligned degree.
  • Experience with any of the following: data center power generation/integration, decommissioning and reclamation plans, cost estimating for construction/decommissioning, EMF, financial modelling, construction monitoring, condition assessments, Owner's Engineering, or Independent Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight and strategic input for renewable energy (solar, wind, BESS), thermal energy, high-voltage, substation, and transmission line projects.
  • Act in responsible charge for engineering deliverables as a Subject Matter Expert.
  • Support and guide substation and distribution engineering teams across multiple Operating Units.
  • Lead technical review to mitigate project risk and support PMs when technical issues arise.
  • Conceptualize complex engineering designs and solutions.
  • Conduct due diligence reviews of engineering documents (studies, reports, drawings) prepared by others.
  • Support client coordination, workload planning, and delegation of technical tasks.
  • Lead technical aspects for proposals, including scope development and labor hour estimating.
  • Collaborate with Global Energy Initiative and Operations leadership on project execution.
  • Train and mentor engineering and technical staff.
  • Deliver grounding SME support and CDEGS training.
  • Support quality improvements and training initiatives with Lead Office Engineers and Discipline Leads.
  • Assist hiring managers with resume screening, technical interviews, and candidate evaluations.
  • Travel up to 10% as needed.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline-specific knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
