About The Position

DOER is seeking an intern to support graphic design and science communication for DOER outreach. The intern will be part of the Coordination and Engagement team which leads DOER’s communications efforts, including media relations, stakeholder engagement, public events, web content, and social media. The intern will work on a variety of public education and awareness initiatives across the breadth of DOER policies including renewable energy, energy efficiency, siting and permitting, and general energy policy. To support these policy initiatives, the intern will work with DOER staff to develop various public-facing content, including one-pagers, informational graphics, and technical assistance documents that communicate the complexity of DOER’s policies and procedures in plain language for a general audience. The intern will coordinate with the Coordination and Engagement team as other staff update the website and distribute social media, press, and other related content. A strong candidate will have solid graphical and written communication skills, including experience using a graphic design platform or software, and good organizational skills. An ideal candidate will have some experience in science communication, especially in energy, and demonstrated experience designing content that explains complicated concepts simply. Knowledge of, or a desire to learn about, Massachusetts’ energy priorities and initiatives is a plus. The intern will need to manage multiple projects with concurrent timelines and will need to be proactive, detail oriented, and able to work independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Work or academic experience in communications, community engagement, digital media, graphic design, multimedia journalism, or a related field.
  • Proficient with graphic design software.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft suite platforms (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • An ideal candidate will have some experience in science communication, especially in energy.
  • Knowledge of or a desire to learn about Massachusetts’ energy priorities and initiatives is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Deputy Commissioner and DOER Divisions to design and write plain language content from longer written content
  • Utilize DOER’s brand guidance and graphic library to create cohesive designs
  • Build a template library for future one-pagers, graphics, etc.
  • Assist the Sitting & Permitting team with designing reader-friendly resources
  • Complete other tasks as needed
