About The Position

SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a collaborative and detail-oriented Design Engineering Aide (under the City's classification title of Engineering Aide). This position will be with SDOT's Transportation Operations Division (TOD). This opportunity presents an exceptional opportunity to work with a team of professionals whose mission is to deliver a safe, reliable, efficient, and socially equitable transportation system that enhances Seattle's environment and economic vitality. The Design Engineering Aide reports to the Design Supervisor and is responsible for supporting designing and supporting crew maintenance and installation work for Transportation Operations, Signal Operations, Traffic Spot Improvements, Neighborhood Greenways, Safe Routes to School, Transit Spot Improvement, and Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan.

Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of high school mathematics including trigonometry (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
  • Current State of Washington driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in traffic signal design, traffic engineering and operations.
  • Civil engineering experience in design of bicycle, pedestrian, and transit facilities, roadways, infrastructure, and signal and lighting improvements related to public works transportation facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and determine complexity of requirements listed on field report request, read and interpret approved plans, specs, and mark-up drawings clearly, legibly, and in accordance with conventions.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • An ability to work independently under strict timelines and constantly changing priorities, while keeping supervisor informed of progress and issues.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, SharePoint, Adobe Professional, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, as well as Hansen and GIS software; knowledge of databases and their application and use in a work environment.
  • Experience coordinating with construction crews.
  • Effectively worked in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.

Responsibilities

  • Performs elementary CAD drafting in preparation and revision of preliminary and final plans for signs/marking and signal design for design work related to new traffic signals, signal modifications, signal rebuilds, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), lighting systems, transit facility, and miscellaneous pedestrian, bicycle, and transit improvements along both arterial and non-arterial roadways.
  • Prepares work orders and performs layout of markings and signs to support projects.
  • Assists with preparing and monitoring project and program schedules, estimates and budgets.
  • Assists with coordination and cooperation with other agencies, departments, divisions, and private utilities involved in or affected by projects.
  • Assists with overseeing project progress from design through construction.
  • Assists with field inspections of work done by crews and contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Revises drawings, and maintains changes, deletions, or additions to engineering records within project management SharePoint and Hansen.
  • Assists with reviewing shop drawings, material sources, and specifications during construction.
  • Promote equity, diversity, and race and social justice at SDOT.
