About The Position

Ulteig is seeking highly qualified and driven professionals for the position of Civil Design Engineer – Renewables, with a focus on solar energy. This role will support utility-scale solar projects by collaborating with Ulteig’s civil, structural, and electrical design teams, as well as engaging directly with clients to deliver innovative and forward-thinking design solutions that advance the development, engineering, and construction of solar initiatives.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program or equivalent is required.
  • Civil Engineering-In-Training (EIT) registration required.
  • Minimum of 3-5+ years of civil engineering experience, required, with at least 1-2 years of experience in design and development of utility scale solar projects preferred.
  • Understanding of site grading design, additions to existing civil designs, and earthwork calculations is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D is required.
  • Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Must have permanent authorization to work in the US

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing advanced formulas and background with dataset management in Microsoft Excel is desired.
  • Exposure to spatial data management software such as ArcGIS Pro/Global Mapper is desired.
  • Familiarity with erosion and sediment control applications and temporary stormwater treatment techniques is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with solar facility foundations, racking, and cable management is strongly desired.
  • Experience performing detailed design of solar facilities with complex topographic, environmental, and non-participating infrastructure constraints is desired.

Responsibilities

  • The individual in this position will work in close coordination with the structural team, concentrating on the preparation of plans and exhibits that define pile foundations—including specifying type, location, elevation, and reveal—for PV arrays, battery energy storage system (BESS) installations, and other associated electrical equipment within these facilities.
  • Applies current, standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to complete engineering tasks, and supports other civil, structural, and electrical design workflows as necessary on a case-by-case basis.
  • Develops plans, specifications, and observation reports that are complete, accurate and in accordance with sound utility-scale solar engineering practices.
  • Is technically involved with the resolution of design challenges that may include performing field investigation or observations and when necessary, resolving discrepancies between multiple sources of information.
  • Performs design computations and calculations related to the civil and structural site design.
  • Maintains a value engineering mindset throughout development, design, and construction.
  • Works closely with clients to understand nuanced technical needs and identify best feasible solution(s).
  • Provides plan revisions during construction under quick-turn around deadlines, attends weekly virtual construction progress meetings, and offers timely external communication to construction field teams
  • Collaborates closely with internal team members and across other internal discipline with a commitment to a high-level of detail and strict adherence to quality control procedures.
  • Review construction submittals for conformance with design specifications
  • Acquire knowledge of PV system components such as racking, messenger/collection system, inverter, and weather station from equipment manufacturers/vendors.
  • Demonstrates a wide degree of out-of-the-box thinking, creativity, and design ownership to improve quality and improve processes.
  • Majority of the work will be in the office for the first few months and then the option to transition to a hybrid role, with up to 5% of the time in the field, visiting clients, and representing Ulteig at conferences and trade shows as warranted.
