About The Position

The Mechanical Design Engineer - Automation Design will be responsible for developing mechanical machine concepts to modify existing or build new equipment. This role involves creating 3D designs for new equipment using SolidWorks 3D CAD Modeling software, collaborating with electrical designers to develop control concepts, and preparing part and assembly drawings. The engineer will also create cost estimates, define and control detailed schedules for large projects, and prepare materials for design reviews. Additional responsibilities include specifying purchased parts, ordering and monitoring their receipt, and working with assembly technicians to address problems during machine build, assembly, and debugging. The engineer will also make plans to integrate equipment into mass production lines and update final drawing packages and operation manuals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Exhibit strong knowledge or interest for design and troubleshooting for engineering concepts
  • Display strong problem solving, critical thinking, and investigation abilities
  • Follow a deep, self-motivation to improve things and innovate solutions for new problems
  • Project leadership and communication skills including the ability to facilitate meetings and build consensus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Proficient in SolidWorks 3D CAD Modeling software

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical machine concepts to modify existing or build new equipment
  • Create 3D designs for new equipment utilizing SolidWorks 3D CAD Modeling software
  • Work with electrical designers to develop the controls concept for the new equipment
  • Create part and assembly drawings
  • Create cost estimates including design man-hours, purchased parts, fabricated parts, and assembly man-hours
  • Define and control detailed schedules for large projects showing design, fabrication, build, and installation
  • Prepare and present materials for design reviews
  • Specify purchased parts
  • Order and monitor receipt of purchased parts
  • Work with assembly technicians and provide countermeasures to problems during machine build/assembly/debug
  • Make plans to integrate equipment into mass production lines
  • Update final drawing packages and create operation manuals
  • Design prototypes, test, and summarize data
  • Coordinate design and/or build activities with outside companies as needed
  • Responsible for launching new projects including obtaining funds, approval from upper management, and project management from start until mass production launch
