About The Position

Physicians Mutual is looking for a Design Director to lead our in-house graphic design team and utilize our brand and visual identity across digital and physical media. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who cares deeply about craft, clarity, and consistency, and knows how to lead a team that delivers all three. You’ll guide designers, shape art direction, establish and champion best practices and processes, and ensure our work is not only visually compelling, but strategically aligned, compliant, and effective. An ideal candidate will teach as much as they learn. If you’re equally comfortable mentoring a team, directing campaigns, implementing the latest technologies and rolling up your sleeves on high-impact work, this role is for you.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in visual, brand, interactive, marketing, and digital design
  • 3+ years leading or managing creative teams
  • A portfolio that exhibits strategic thinking and high-quality execution across channels
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Cloud and Figma
  • Strong understanding of: Brand systems and visual design User experience and User interface design best practices Typography, color, and the application of core design concepts across print and digital media Website optimization, performance, and accessibility standards (WCAG)

Responsibilities

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of 6 designers
  • Set a high bar for quality, consistency, and craft
  • Provide thoughtful feedback, coaching, and performance guidance
  • Lead design for integrated campaigns across print, digital, and interactive
  • Partner closely with copy and marketing to design cohesive, effective materials
  • Ensure brand alignment and advancement throughout projects
  • Lead and contribute hands-on to priority and high-visibility projects
  • Maintain and evolve brand standards across all channels, overseeing the Brand Design Guide an System and its evolution
  • Ensure all work is accurate, compliant, and on-brand
  • Build and refine workflows that improve speed, clarity, and quality
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to manage priorities and capacity
  • Create scalable systems and processes (templates, libraries, communications)
  • Explore and implement new tools and technologies—including AI
  • Continuously improve how the team works and the projects they delivers
