The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with NPS at the Mojave National Preserve (MOJA), is recruiting 2 Desert Tortoise Technicians to participate in the survey, documentation, and management. During road and related developments in MOJA, the Desert Tortoise Technicians will conduct field surveys and construction monitoring. Tortoise observations and data within and around the park will also be recorded and analyzed by the Technicians. Primary Responsibilities: Monitor project areas during construction or other activities that could be destructive to habitat or potentially hazardous to endangered or threatened species; Collect data and manage large datasets; Work collaboratively with Managers and other Resource Management staff; Analyze wildlife observations and data within and around MOJA; Assist ongoing resource-based activities by monitoring park resources, sometimes utilizing volunteers; and Create, promote, facilitate and/or improve the public understanding of natural, cultural, historic, recreational, and other aspects of MOJA. Authorized Mojave Desert Tortoise field biologists are encouraged to apply. Timeline: March, 2026; Term length 10 weeks Full time (40 hours/week) Schedule: Schedule: 4-10’s or 5, 4, 9’s (subject to change as needed) Location: Mojave National Preserve (MOJA) is 1.6 million acres, with about 44% of it designated as Wilderness. While most of MOJA is made up of the Mojave Desert, components of the Great Basin Desert are found in higher elevations and parts of the southern portion of the park are made up of the Sonoran Desert. Resources of the region include threatened and/or endangered species habitat, big game habitats, abandoned mine lands, and historic and prehistoric cultural sites. The Park will provide housing in a dormitory. The interns will have a private room with a shared bath, shared kitchen and common areas, located in Kelso, CA.
