About The Position

The Iowa Department of Public Safety is seeking a Communications Center Specialist 2 to work within the Des Moines State Radio. This role involves receiving and processing emergency calls, monitoring communication systems, and providing critical information to law enforcement and emergency services. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to handle sensitive information while ensuring public safety.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience as a Communications operator, dispatcher, or radio operator in a communications center.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience, where one year of experience equals 30 semester hours of college coursework in law enforcement or a related field, with a maximum substitution of two years.
  • Current continuous experience in the state executive branch with 12 months of full-time work as a Communications Center Specialist 1.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in emergency response communications.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement protocols and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Elicit information from private citizens and state and federal agencies via telephone and forward it to the proper personnel.
  • Monitor equipment and isolate system problems, notifying repair services as needed.
  • Receive and enter road condition data from other communications centers into the computer system.
  • Transmit and monitor messages between state, county, and municipal law enforcement or emergency services using two-way radio and communication systems.
  • Obtain confidential criminal records and traffic safety information for law enforcement officers.
  • Assess and direct information received through the Governor's School Safety Bureau to appropriate agencies or first responders.
