About The Position

The Dermatology Technician with an Ophthalmology Concentration supports dermatology and ophthalmology providers in the evaluation, treatment, and management of skin conditions with periocular and ocular relevance. This role combines traditional dermatology assisting responsibilities with specialized knowledge of eyelid, periocular, and ocular surface conditions. The technician ensures efficient clinic flow, accurate documentation, patient education, and high standards of clinical care across both specialties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a medical assisting, dermatology technician, or ophthalmic technician training program, or equivalent clinical experience
  • Basic understanding of dermatologic and or ophthalmic terminology
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Ability to stand, walk, and assist patients throughout the clinic day
  • Ability to lift and move equipment as needed
  • Manual dexterity for assisting in procedures and equipment handling
  • Visual acuity sufficient for clinical observation and documentation

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Dermatology Technician, Medical Assistant, or Ophthalmic Assistant
  • Prior experience in dermatology, ophthalmology, or oculoplastics
  • Experience with EMR systems and clinical photography
  • Knowledge of periocular anatomy and common eyelid conditions

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for dermatologic and ophthalmic examinations and procedures
  • Obtain and document patient history, including dermatologic, ocular, and systemic conditions
  • Assist providers during dermatologic procedures, including biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, laser treatments, and cosmetic procedures
  • Perform room setup, instrument preparation, and post-procedure room turnover
  • Apply and remove dressings, bandages, and ophthalmic shields as indicated
  • Perform basic ophthalmic testing as trained and delegated (visual acuity, intraocular pressure screening, external eye exams, lid evaluations)
  • Assist with imaging or documentation of periocular lesions and eyelid pathology
  • Support minor in-office ophthalmic procedures related to dermatologic care (e.g., chalazion care, lid lesion removals)
  • Educate patients on post-procedure eye care, medication usage, and periocular hygiene
  • Provide patient education on dermatologic and ophthalmic conditions, treatment plans, medications, and post-procedure care
  • Reinforce provider instructions and ensure patient understanding
  • Coordinate referrals between dermatology and ophthalmology as needed
  • Communicate effectively with patients regarding scheduling, follow-ups, and treatment expectations
  • Accurately document clinical encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Prepare procedure documentation, consents, and imaging uploads
  • Maintain compliance with infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, and clinic safety standards
  • Ensure proper handling, labeling, and processing of specimens
  • Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot dermatology and ophthalmology equipment
  • Monitor and restock clinical supplies
  • Ensure proper sterilization and storage of instruments
  • Work closely with dermatologists, ophthalmologists, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff
  • Support clinic efficiency, patient flow, and quality initiatives
  • Participate in training, competency assessments, and continuing education as required
