Supports the full range of dermatological surgical procedures performed by the Dermatology Department by preparing patients, assisting providers with procedures including but not limited to MOHS surgery, removal of skin cancers and other growths in the skin, the removal of stitches and the performance of other related procedures as assigned. Collects and processes surgical laboratory specimens, performs routine and automated technical procedures, and related duties.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a high school education.
  • Current Medical Assistant credential administered by a recognized school which is accredited by the Department of Health or a Medical Assistant credential from a UMass Memorial Medical Center approved program (ARMA, NHA etc.).
  • This Medical Assistant credential must be maintained.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Must be obtained within 2 months of hire/transfer.
  • Broad knowledge of dermatological procedures including MOHS surgery, removal of melanomas, tumors, skin tags, logging, specimen preparation, typically acquired through a minimum of two years direct patient care experience in a dermatology practice or surgical setting.
  • Knowledge of office and laboratory procedures
  • Medical terminology and computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the exam and/or procedure rooms by selecting and preparing supplies. Assembles, adjusts, observes and maintains non-sterile equipment to ensure that it remains in working order.
  • Prepares patients for surgery by providing physical and emotional support. Review medical record with patient. May take and record vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, etc. Observes patients, (physical appearance, attitude, appetite, etc.), records observations and alerts supervisor or provider. Performs pre-op incision site preparation as directed by cleaning, shaving and disinfecting the skin with an antiseptic solution. During MOHS surgery, maps the area of tumor removal as directed by provider.
  • Set up of mayo tray with instruments and supplies according to procedure and provider preference. Performs sterile scrub procedures and related activities such as draping the patient and operative area.
  • Assists in connecting & applying surgical equipment. Assists in the surgical procedure by passing instruments, sutures, sponges and needles before, during, and after surgery. Operates lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units and surgical/medical equipment. Holds retractors or instruments. Sponges or suctions the operative site as directed. Participates in counting sponges, needles, and instruments before, during, and after surgery.
  • Collects, labels, and transports specimens to appropriate departments and complete requisitions as required.
