About The Position

The Tucson Unified School District is searching for a Deputy Superintendent who is more than just an administrator—we are looking for a visionary architect of equity and excellence. As the second-in-command and a key member of the Superintendent’s Leadership Team, you will hold the blueprint for the District’s Strategic Plan, translating high-level goals into transformative action across all regions. You aren’t just managing a system; you are mentoring the next generation of leaders and ensuring that every student, regardless of background, has access to a culturally responsive, high-caliber education. Your day-to-day will involve: Strategic Leadership: Serving as the Superintendent’s lead administrative contact and designee, overseeing high-level organizational structure and personnel recommendations. Equity-Centered Oversight: Directing student services and curriculum implementation to ensure inclusive, standards-based instruction that honors the diverse historical and cultural experiences of our community. Operational Excellence: Synthesizing complex achievement data to re-allocate resources where they are needed most, while standardizing regional protocols for discipline and staff retention. Community Diplomacy: Acting as a high-level mediator and district ambassador, building vital partnerships with civic organizations and business leaders. REPORTS TO Superintendent SUMMARY The Deputy Superintendent drives strategic leadership and innovation to ensure exceptional student achievement, school improvement, and organizational excellence through oversight of the Regional Assistant Superintendents (RAS) team. This position ensures alignment with the District’s Strategic Plan by exemplifying leadership standards and equitable resource distribution while supporting innovative pedagogical practices and synchronizing district-wide efforts to maximize operational efficiency and sustainable school operations.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Education, Educational Administration, Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction or related educational field.
  • Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Valid Arizona Administrative Certificate.
  • Ten years of experience in an administrative role (Principal or central leader role) supervising schools or major departments.
  • FBI fingerprint background check
  • Proof of immunity to rubeola (measles) and rubella (German measles), or proof of MMR immunization
  • MVReport – showing no more than the allowable points against Driver’s License as described under Governing Board Policy: EEB-R-1 Business and Personnel Transportation Services - Transportation by Employees.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral Degree in Education, Educational Administration, Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction or related educational field.
  • Valid Arizona PreK-12 Superintendent Certificate.
  • Five years of experience in a district-level administrative role (e.g. Director, Senior Director, Executive Director, Assistant Superintendent or Deputy Superintendent) supervising other Administrators and/or major departments.
  • Five years of experience as a K-12 School Principal in a large urban school district.
  • Two years of experience in human resources management or district-wide operational oversight.
  • Two years of experience in Bilingual Education.
  • Two years of experience in Exceptional Education (Special Education).
  • Bilingual/Biliterate in Spanish and English.
