Deputy Social Media Editor

The BulwarkWashington, DC
1d$80,000 - $100,000Onsite

About The Position

The Bulwark isn’t just a business, it’s a mission. We're a fast-growing media company producing analysis and reporting in defense of liberal democracy. Our podcasts, newsletters, and videos cut through the noise to deliver sharp, independent analysis. Inside The Bulwark, we live by a few simple rules: candor over spin, collaboration over ego, and a commitment to making each other better. We’re a nimble, fast-moving team that takes our work seriously—but not ourselves. We’re looking for a Deputy Social Media Editor to join our team. About the Role The Deputy Social Media Editor plays a key role in day-to-day execution and management of The Bulwark’s social media operation across platforms. Reporting to the Digital Director, this role focuses on executing daily social publishing—delivering timely, high-quality output across platforms, while helping maintain consistency of voice, standards, and strategic goals. This is a hands-on, execution-forward role for someone with strong editorial judgement, platform fluency, and a willingness to learn and experiment. You’ll be deeply involved in daily publishing while also helping shape workflows, coordinate coverage, and act as a point person across editorial, audio, and video teams—particularly during breaking news and fast-moving political moments. While this role is primarily focused on execution, there is room to grow ownership and management over a specific platform or functional area, with the opportunity to test new approaches and drive performance over time. This role follows a regular schedule that includes at least one weekend day, balanced by a weekday(s) off during the Monday-Friday workweek.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of professional experience contributing to or managing social media accounts, ideally in a political, media, or journalism-focused environment.
  • Strong familiarity with major social platforms, including their audiences, content formats, and technical constraints.
  • Experience with editing social videos and optimizing for platforms.
  • Clear, concise writing skills and strong editorial judgment.
  • A deep interest in politics, current events, and media.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, especially around breaking news.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfort working a regular schedule that includes at least one weekend day, with a weekday off during the Monday-Friday workweek.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage daily social media publishing across platforms including X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, and others, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency of voice.
  • Edit, cut, and deliver social video from our shows and videos.
  • Write and edit platform-appropriate copy, headlines, and posts that reflect The Bulwark’s voice and audience expectations.
  • Maintain editorial standards and brand voice across all social channels, acting as a final check on tone, framing, and accuracy.
  • Track performance metrics and engagement, helping assess what is resonating with audiences and informing future decisions.
  • Experiment with formats, posting strategies, and platform features to improve reach and engagement.
  • Stay current on platform changes, best practices, audience trends, and competitor activity.
  • Guide and model best practices for audience engagement, including when and how to participate in comment threads and conversations.
  • Take increasing ownership of a specific platform or area over time, with support and direction from the Digital Director.

Benefits

  • Full employer-sponsored health plans
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Generous vacation and paid time off
  • Commuter benefits and Employee Assistance Program
