About The Position

The Deputy Sheriff Pool position involves performing general duty law enforcement work in protecting the lives, property, and rights of citizens in Guilford County. This includes serving a variety of civil court papers and criminal papers, conducting initial investigations, patrolling assigned zones, and responding to citizen calls for assistance. The role requires considerable tact, firmness, and courtesy in serving the public, as well as the ability to exercise alertness and independent judgment in unusual situations. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Department.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated work experience in local or federal law enforcement, military police, or other law enforcement settings.
  • Graduation from an associate degree program with emphasis in criminal justice or related field, or from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) preferred.
  • Must possess the requirement for employment, education, and training standards for law enforcement officers as required by the North Carolina Criminal Training and Standards Council Act.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols an assigned zone of the county to detect and deter crime.
  • Responds to citizen calls for assistance.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes and complaints.
  • Makes arrests and transports prisoners.
  • Testifies in court concerning enforcement and investigative activities.
  • Participates in special investigations.
  • Explains law to citizens.
  • Maintains records of patrol and investigative activities.
  • Serves criminal papers such as warrants and subpoenas.
  • Serves civil process papers such as civil summons and court orders.
  • Participates in surveillance and stakeout duties.
  • Assists with raids and searches.
  • Cooperates with other law enforcement officers in conducting investigations.
