DEPUTY SHERIFF – BLET CERTIFIED The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is seeking BLET certified Deputy Sheriffs who embody the values and diversity of the Durham County community. TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES: On an assigned shift, operates a patrol car to observe violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order. Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints. Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, capiases, court orders, notices, attachments, claims and deliveries, ejections, executions, and other legal papers, makes arrests. Testifies in court. Assists in domestic disputes. Directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings. Assists other law enforcement officers in investigations. Serves as court bailiff and prisoner guard. Reports unsafe conditions existing in the street or other public facilities. Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, prepares property and evidence, recording and issuing of evidence in court cases. Transport prisoners, mental patients and others as required. Performs Bailiff and court security duties as assigned. Prepares detailed reports. Performs related tasks as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES General knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures. General knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Department. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports. Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public. Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances. Ability to develop skills in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles. Ability to maintain physical agility and endurance.

Requirements

  • Most have a current NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
