About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to provide law enforcement and security to the County. The Deputy Sheriff I is responsible for processing new inmates and arrested persons, conducting identification procedures, searching inmates, and securing persons in jail or holding cells. This role includes preparing processing paperwork, informing inmates of charges and bond amounts, and screening inmates for medical conditions. The Deputy Sheriff I also oversees visitation, monitors security of the jail, and prepares various reports and logs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Little or no previous experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
• Must meet minimum requirements as set by POST and State Law.

Responsibilities

• Processes new inmates and arrested persons.
• Books new inmates and conducts identification procedures.
• Searches inmates and seizes all personal property.
• Secures persons in jail or holding cells.
• Prepares processing paperwork and informs inmates of charges and bond amounts.
• Screens inmates for medical conditions and retrieves them for medical attention.
• Directs inmates to infirmary and retrieves various documents and court papers concerning inmates.
• Reviews court list and assigns location of inmates.
• Performs security checks and searches of cells for contrabands.
• Controls behavior of inmates and restrains irate or violent inmates.
• Manages physically and mentally ill inmates.
• Conducts head counts and oversees the safety of all staff and inmates.
• Oversees visitation and checks identification of visitors.
• Logs visitors in computer and directs them to proper locations.
• Accounts for inmates being transported to various locations.
• Escorts inmates to various locations and maintains inmate movement log.
• Sends notification to various agencies.
• Answers or directs questions of inmates and assists in requests of inmates.
• Monitors security of jail including tower monitoring and video monitoring.
• Responds to emergencies and prepares various reports and logs.
