About The Position

The position of Deputy Sheriff involves performing a variety of duties and tasks related to the protection of life, limb, and property. The incumbent is a Sworn and Certified Peace Officer who reports to the Shift Sergeant and may function as Shift Sergeant in his or her absence. The role requires the completion of a secondary education or equivalent, along with certification from the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council. Candidates must be able to administer first aid/CPR, possess a valid Ohio driver's license, and maintain a clean criminal record. The work consists of complex, varied, non-standardized tasks requiring the application of numerous laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. The incumbent must be able to quickly react to potentially threatening situations on a regular basis.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Preserve the peace and enforce the laws of the state of Ohio.
  • Protect the life and property of citizens as a sworn Peace Officer of Delaware County.
  • Patrol assigned area.
  • Respond to criminal and civil calls as dispatched.
  • Apprehend violators of the law.
  • Perform vacant house and business checks.
  • Control traffic.
  • Transport prisoners.
  • Provide county court and county building security as assigned.
  • Maintain assigned vehicle and other equipment.
  • Prepare accurate and complete reports relative to each situation.
  • Investigate criminal activity including performing full investigation of misdemeanors, felonies, and traffic offenses.
  • Evaluate reported felony and misdemeanor offenses in assigned area.
  • Take statements from suspects, victims, and witnesses.
  • Contact complainants and witnesses in follow-up investigations.
  • Interrogate suspects and make arrests.
  • Provide surveillance of locations or persons as assigned.
  • Prepare criminal case files and develop probable cause for issuance of arrest or search warrants.
  • Appear in court as a witness when required.
  • Represent the Sheriff's Office in the community including organizing and conducting community meetings and crime prevention programs.
  • Work closely with residents and community management to resolve problems in assigned area.
  • Speak to community groups, schools, and other organizations on law enforcement issues.
  • Educate the public in law enforcement practices and application of the law.
  • Ensure the proper delivery of legal notices including executing warrants for arrest, search warrants, and probate court orders.
  • Serve individuals with summons, attachments, and other legal notices as issued by the court.
  • Receive and coordinate requests for process service.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of time, place, and manner of serving legal notices and status of court orders.
  • Prepare reports required by courts in response to legal documents.
  • Submit reports to supervisor on daily activities and perform other related duties as assigned.
