About The Position

CITY OF STAUNTON Deputy Registrar: Part-Time General Definition Part-time position offering approximately 30 hours a week, subject to change during certain seasons based on job demands. Perform complex and significant administrative work in the City of Staunton Voter Registration office assisting the Director of Elections/General Registrar, both in and out of the office as it relates to the administration of elections. Assist the Director of Elections/General Registrar with maintaining voter registration records and assisting candidates and the general public. The Director of Elections/General Registrar is appointed by the three-member Electoral Board, who oversees the performance of the Registrar. Organizational Relationship Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Elections/General Registrar. Responsible for the daily operation of the office in the absence of the Director of Elections/General Registrar. Special Requirements and Obligations Must be a registered voter of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be very cognizant of the protection of confidentiality of voter records and security. Must conduct all duties in a non-partisan manner. Must be available to work limited Saturdays and a 16+ hour work day on Election Day. Physical Demands This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Position requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Work is generally performed in an office environment. Essential Functions and Tasks Applicant must be able to assist the Director of Elections/General Registrar and Electoral Board fulfill their duties as specified by the Code of Virginia. The Deputy Registrar will assist with the following duties, though this list is not exhaustive of all duties: Serving as the office receptionist and performing administrative support. Providing education to the public concerning voter registration, absentee voting, voter registration laws, candidate qualifications, and other election related issues. Maintaining the official voter registration records for the City of Staunton. Administering in-person voting. Assisting with preparations for elections. Coordinating voter education and outreach initiatives. Performing the duties of the Director of Elections/General Registrar in the Registrar’s absence. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of, or the willingness to learn, Federal, State, and local laws and regulations pertaining to citizenship, voter registration, and elections. Ability to deal with the general public and coworkers in a courteous and diplomatic manner. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and possess the ability to use a state mandated data entry system. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written directions. Confidentiality REQUIRED. Training, Education, & Experience Special training on election law will be provided on an ongoing basis. Education equivalent to a High School Diploma required. Preferred continued education and/or experience in relation to data entry, clerical work, and elections. Pay Range: $18.00 Approx. Hours: 30 hours/week No City benefits.
