About The Position

At Courier Newsroom, we’re reinventing local media to inform and empower communities through impactful reporting. Our mission is rooted in civic engagement and equity—and we’re growing fast. We are presently looking for a Deputy Political Editor, East Coast (State) to oversee regional political content strategy. The Deputy of Political Editor, East Coast will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing Courier’s political content strategy for Courier’s state newsrooms. Reporting directly to the VP of Political Content, States, this role will provide editorial and strategic support to the VP to help implement political editorial strategy, help manage the department’s full-time employees, and work with staff to edit and optimize their content to ensure success of impactful political journalism products (newsletters, video series’, podcasts, etc.). This individual will help ensure alignment between state-specific goals and company mission and objectives to maximize impact, audience engagement, and revenue growth. This position is Remote, with strong preference for applicants living on the East Coast. Applicants outside of the region will be considered, but must be able to work East Coast business hours.

Requirements

  • 5-8 years experience in political journalism, editorial leadership, or a related role in media and/or politics.
  • Strong editorial skills with the ability to support the development and refinement of content strategies.
  • Experience in multimedia/video journalism.
  • Demonstrated experience in team collaboration and mentorship.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • A strong understanding of data analytics and its application to content optimization.
  • Passion for local journalism, civic engagement, and amplifying underrepresented voices.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with digital content management systems and social media platforms.

Responsibilities

  • With (or under the guidance of) the VP, develop and implement the political editorial content strategy for state newsrooms, ensuring alignment with Courier’s mission and goals.
  • Directly manage 6 political correspondents.
  • Work alongside political correspondents to create, edit, and refine products that resonate with target audiences and drive engagement.
  • Ensure that content is accurate, fair, and adheres to journalistic ethics.
  • With the VP, manage and mentor the political editorial team, including recruitment, onboarding, professional development, and regular 1:1 check-ins.
  • Provide regular updates and insights to the VP on progress toward departmental goals, proactively identifying and addressing challenges.
  • Provide training and guidance to team members on building their personal brands, enhancing communication skills, and optimizing their online presence.
  • Assist in team performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
  • Leverage data and analytics to measure the performance of political products and content; identify opportunities for improvement, and optimize audience impact.
  • Experiment with new ideas and formats to enhance engagement and grow reach.
  • Help ensure content resonates with diverse audiences. Stay informed on industry trends, audience behaviors, and best practices in political journalism and content distribution.
  • Assist in the implementation of new tools, technologies, and approaches to enhance the effectiveness and reach of political content.
