About The Position

The Lumber Manufactory (TLM) is building the sustainable future of the lumber industry with next-generation sawmill technology. Backed by leading investors, including Cantos, Slow Ventures, Susa Ventures, Banter, Humba Ventures, and Ravelin Capital. The Lumber Manufactory (TLM) is a next-generation sawmill operator focused on sustainable manufacturing of dimensional wood products. TLM is in the process of designing a state-of-the-art sawmill optimal for producing high-grade dimensional products, with a focus on simplicity and fast construction. Overview: We’re seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Deputy General Counsel to serve as the General Counsel’s principal partner on transactions, real estate, insurance, and strategic risk management. This senior, high-impact role offers a unique opportunity to help drive the company’s most important projects while also building scalable legal infrastructure. The ideal candidate will combine strong legal acumen with practical business judgment to support strategic initiatives and operational needs. This role reports directly to the COO and General Counsel.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active license to practice law.
  • 5+ years of experience in transactions work at a law firm or in-house at an industrial or real-asset-heavy company. Prior work with manufacturing enterprises is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of contracts, property law, title issues, and prudent risk management.
  • Exceptional negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate real estate contracts, leases, and related agreements.
  • Advise on property acquisitions, zoning, land use, and permitting issues.
  • Manage outside counsel efficiently, including deal structuring, diligence, retention of subject-matter expert consultants, and negotiation.
  • Ensure compliance with insurance requirements for operations, construction, and property coverage.
  • Assess and manage risk exposure related to real estate and insurance matters.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external counsel on complex transactions and disputes.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local laws impacting real estate, finance, factory operations, employment, and other topics.
  • Support pre-litigation strategy and claims management when necessary.
