About The Position

The Deputy Fire Marshal performs specialized work in fire prevention, investigation, inspection, and public education. This position enforces local fire codes and state laws to ensure the safety of citizens, visitors, and property within Johnson County. The Deputy Fire Marshal conducts fire inspections, investigates the origin and cause of fires, and assists with emergency management and community risk reduction efforts.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required. Associate or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Criminal Justice, Public Safety, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years of fire service experience, with at least one (1) year performing fire inspections, investigations, or code enforcement duties.
• Must hold current Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Fire Inspector Certification.
• Must hold a current Peace Officer Certification from TCOLE
• Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License and an acceptable driving record.

Nice To Haves

• TCFP Fire Investigator Certification preferred
• Additional certifications such as Fire Service Instructor, or Plans Examiner preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs inspection and prevention activities on public and commercial buildings.
• Issues orders for correction of fire and life safety hazards and/or violations of Johnson County Fire Code.
• Performs fire and arson investigations as needed, and works with investigators from the Sheriff's Office and/or State's Fire Marshal's Office as applicable.
• Participates in public fire prevention and educational activities and programs.
• Interacts professionally with law enforcement, fire department personnel, contractors, county and city officials, other employees, and the general public.
• Prepares and maintains accurate inspection, investigation, and enforcement records.
• Testifies in court as needed regarding fire investigations or code enforcement cases.
• Assists the Fire Marshal in administrative duties, emergency management coordination, and public outreach activities.
• Serves on the Emergency Management Team during times of emergency or disaster, and will be assigned an emergency/disaster role.
