About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Designated Campus Fire Marshal, the Deputy Fire Marshal assists in the management of fire prevention and public education programs. The Deputy Fire Marshal oversees the Title 19 inspection program, performing comprehensive fire code compliance inspections of all campus buildings on an annual basis and monitoring necessary follow-up activities. The Deputy Fire Marshal may also assist with the Title 24 program. The Deputy Fire Marshal also assists Colleges, Housing, and Educational Services (CHES) with conducting annual fire drills for campus residential facilities and provides general guidance on the California Fire Code to the campus community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience and/or training.
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety codes, regulations, and standards including: California Code of Regulations (CCR) Titles 8, 19, 22, 24, California Building Code, California Fire Code, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
  • Knowledge of fire protection principles, application of fire and building codes, safety, and related training methods.
  • Ability to promote and maintain a team-oriented work environment and ensure intra and inter-team/unit cooperation, communication, and professionalism.
  • Ability to interpret and apply applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.

  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize, and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints.

  • Proficient in the use of personal computers using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Google Office Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • BA or AS degree in Fire Science/Technology or building design.
  • ICC Fire Inspector 1 (complete in 1 year as condition of hire).
  • California State Fire Training Fire Inspector 1 class series (Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D) (complete in 1 year as condition of hire).
  • Ability to review plans in one of the following areas: architectural, automatic sprinklers, fire alarms and/or water and access.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Title 19 inspections, including comprehensive fire code compliance inspections of all campus buildings on an annual basis and monitoring necessary follow-up activities.
  • Assist with review and inspection of new construction under the Title 24 program.
  • Develop, implement, and manage fire prevention and public education programs.
  • Provide general guidance on the California Fire Code to the campus community.
  • Assist Colleges, Housing, and Educational Services (CHES) with conducting annual fire drills for campus residential facilities.
  • Assist campus Building Emergency Coordinators (BECs) with conducting various building evacuations and fire drills.
  • Represent the Campus Fire Marshal at meetings and events in their absence.
