The Deputy Fire Marshal performs technical work in fire inspection, prevention, education, and arson investigation for Harnett County Emergency Services. This role involves enforcing fire codes, conducting inspections, investigating fire causes, and providing public education on fire safety. The Deputy Fire Marshal ensures compliance with regulations and maintains records related to fire safety and inspections.

  • Conducts fire safety inspections of commercial and industrial establishments, schools, and other facilities to identify fire hazards and ensure compliance with fire codes.
  • Investigates complaints of fire safety hazards and issues citations for violations of fire codes.
  • Reviews commercial building plans to ensure compliance with state and county building codes.
  • Conducts technical inspections of new construction and modifications to ensure adherence to fire codes.
  • Investigates suspicious fires to determine cause and origin, prepares documentation for court, and testifies as necessary.
  • Conducts public education classes on fire prevention and safety for various audiences.
  • Maintains technical records and reports related to fire inspections and activities.
  • Assists local fire departments with emergency response efforts, including fire suppression and rescue operations.
  • Participates in training and drills to maintain certifications and knowledge of firefighting techniques.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of work experience in fire services or equivalent education/experience.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • NC Level I Standard Fire Inspector Certification.
  • NC Fire Fighter Level I and II Certifications.
  • NC Level I Hazardous Materials Certification.
  • NC Level III Fire Inspector Certification (or obtain within a reasonable period after employment).
  • NC Fire Investigator Certification (or obtain within a reasonable period after employment).
  • Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local fire codes and regulations.
  • Experience in public education and community outreach regarding fire safety.
  • Skills in fire investigation techniques and evidence gathering.
